I have most of my life had a weight problem and it was cause for a lot of teasing in school. I manage to get past it and eventually lost a lot of weight and by the time I turned 21 I was at my lowest weight ever.
That's when I met my husband. Once we settle into a relationship and moved in together we both started to pick up weight. We were comfortable with our selves and didn't worry about it much. By the time we got married I was already a size 18 in clothing. I went up to about 20, 22 in size before I really felt uncomfortable with my self.
I think the fact that takeout was easier, stress was constant and home life was in turmoil the last couple of pounds really just slipped on.
The last 3 years was really trying in a lot of ways. We had decided to pack up our life in South Africa and move to the UK with our children. We had sold our home and my husband had resigned his job. We had started to sell off our furniture and we were a few days away from paying airline tickets. My kids were a month away from turning 3 and 1. It was one night that changed our lives for ever.
My husband, on his way home from work, was in a motorbike accident. I remember that evening clearly as if it was yesterday. I had just taken the kids out the bath and was busy drying them in there bedroom. The dinner was ready on the stove waiting for him to arrive home and I got the call.
A friend of ours phoned me and said my husband just had an accident in front of his home. I kept telling him that he was lying to me, I just didn't want to believe him. I don't think it really sunk in till the paramedics actually called me and let me speak to him. He was not really making any sense but they said they were taking him to hospital.
I started to call my friends for help and they came to watch the kids. One friend drove me to hospital and that is were I spent the next few hours not knowing what was happening.
After I'd stopped smoking for over 4 years I started to smoke again as a couping mechanism and waited for news. He spent 4 months in hospital with extensive damage to his leg and a broken pelvis. While he was in hospital I lost my job due to them feeling that my husbands situation was effecting my work and I had to move out of our know sold house.
I moved in with family of friends of ours with my 2 children and sent what we had left to storage not knowing what was going to happen to us. It was turmoil, not sleeping, eating takeout when at hospital, drinking glasses of wine at night and smoking to pass the days away.
Eventually he was discharged and we had to start making choices for our future. We had put on hold our move to the UK and with that in mind we moved 1800km (1100m) from our home to my father in law. While there we helped them with there holiday accommodation upgrades during which my husband worked on getting better. Most days it wasn't a choice in meals, however we were eating a little more healthy.
Almost 8 months after the accident we finally decided to get on the plane and take a leap of faith in our original decision to move to the UK. We arrived in the UK on the 27th of February 2009 the day before my birthday. It was strange to us, so many different ways of eating McD's was round the corner, TV dinners were cheap and we ate well. We bought a chip fryer and started to make chips and curry sauce, a lot. I even deep fried the chicken nuggets. We made fatty foods and never really had fruit in the house.
Don't get me wrong I love food and I am a big eater, still am for that matter, I just choose differently. My husband and I gained more weight and before we started this eating plan I was at 110kg/17.4.5 St. This was the most I had ever weighed. I didn't get on scales willingly and didn't really look at myself in the mirror. I had hardly any clothes that I would call nice and I stayed out of the way of camera's. I have tried to find picture of myself before I lost all this weight but there is not very many of them. I have to tell you my confidence was shot.
I met a few mum's from the school were my kids go and started to chat to them on Facebook. I was intrigued by Penny's status updates that she made. She was always talking about SW chips and Chocolate by syn value. She was eating burgers and bacon butty's. She was posting how much she lost every week and seeing her everyday I saw the difference. She was loosing weight and I wanted to know how she did, and this while she was still eating so much. When I eventually spoke to her she said that I should join her at her group. So another friend and myself did just that.
I joined the 9th of June 2010 and this is my story.
